The poor pay for them with taxes. So what I'm proposing would not decrease the affordability of libraries, it would merely increase their quality and get the government out of something it shouldn't be in. AS for intellectual diversity in libraries, while they do have some conservative books, the overwhelming majority have a statist, pro-government slant. (Surprise, surprise.) Because of course if the government owns things it will be using those things to promote its own interests. It's hard for us imagine private libraries today, but back when people actually solved problems with their brains instead of running to the government for help, private libraries existed and furthermore some were FREE, founded by generous rich people who wanted so supply free materials to the poor, no taxes, no fines, no subscription fee. So consider the non-government option for any problem and if you do a little thinking you should be able to come up with an answer. Like parks? There's a non-government option. There could be a nonprofit organization that people donate money to and purchase memeberships similar to Discover Passes from that purchases land to turn into parks. Like Welfare? Donate some of your money to the poor! For almost everything the government does there is a cheaper, less corrupted, and more commonsense way to do the same thing PRIVATELY.
