Although the past was undeniably racist, we should be moving on from the past.

It is near-impossible to do so- even children as young as 5 have been noted to identify people based on race. In addition, moving on is a bad idea- the past was still incredibly recent and racism still exists today. Reparations are necessary as people harmed by racism never had it made up to them and people of color are still overall disadvantaged compared to white people (and the counter-point that Union soldiers should get some of the reparations is invalid, as it was the entire U.S. that helped spread slavery in the first place).
