It not only alienates, but makes people hostile towards the protestors. Nobody is forced to support a cause.

Yes, riots are the voice of the unheard. The issue is the methods and execution by many protesters are misguided

I don't think the point is necessarily to persuade the public, since the overwhelming majority of people are already in favor of a cease-fire, but moreso just to create disruptions significant enough to force government action. It's basically the only decent alternative to violence.
