Do drastic actions, like throwing vehicle keys into the Bay, effectively persuade the public to support the protesters' cause or does it alienate potential allies?

It not only alienates, but makes people hostile towards the protestors. Nobody is forced to support a cause.

Hell yeah! I always wondered why people hadn't ever done that before for a protest. Would really muck things up.

Yes, riots are the voice of the unheard. The issue is the methods and execution by many protesters are misguided

I don't think the point is necessarily to persuade the public, since the overwhelming majority of people are already in favor of a cease-fire, but moreso just to create disruptions significant enough to force government action. It's basically the only decent alternative to violence.
