The district opposes the event, and some Jewish groups raised concerns about what they saw as bias.
The suggested curriculum celebrates Palestinian music, food and poetry and recommends videos on the region’s politics from PBS and Vox. The curriculum also condemns antisemitism and states, “We must ensure that our Jewish students and colleagues feel safe, supported and heard at school.”
Much of the recommended material comes from pro-Palestinian advocacy groups.
A coloring book for elementary students features a Palestinian character who says, “A group of bullies called Zionists wanted our land so they stole it by force and hurt many people.”
It also introduces the argument that Palestinian refugees have a right to return to the land that makes up the Jewish state. Children are prompted to solve a maze and given the instructions, “Handala has his family’s old house key. Now, he needs your help to get back home to Palestine! Trace a way home for Handala.”

Everyone needs to learn their own opinion, and this could cause violence.

Why does an elementary school teacher think it's appropriate to try to influence children to pick a side in a conflict a half a world away?
@FearlessR3publicanGreen6mos6MO
One might argue that Oakland teachers should ensure that all of their students are meeting basic educational targets before they worry about ensuring that their students side against an American ally in a geopolitical conflict taking place halfway around the globe.

Educating students on the subject of the Israeli Palestinian conflict could pose many benefits and as long as the teachers are not heavily biased and explains the damages that Hamas has caused within Israel, this could only be a good thing.

We should freeze ALL federal aid to the city of Oakland until its schools keep ALL students safe and respect their obligations under title 9. If Newsome and California won’t enforce title 9 then the state should also have all federal aid frozen. If the schools won’t keep all girls safe and neither will the state follow title 9 we should call out the national guard to enforce school safety just like when the kkk did this to blacks in the 50’s and the nation responded as a whole to protect their right to an education after brown vs board of education determined separate/segregated was inherently unequal and unconstitutional pursuant to equal protection requirements

Soundn't discuss personal opinions

Teachers should not fight for active support publicly on issues that don't involve them.
@9HG8BXD6mos6MO
Palestine needs support in their time of war.
@9HGB84KRepublican6mos6MO
Hamas has been deemed a terrorist and should not be openly supported in schools.

I do believe that the Palestinian people should be supported by the US through giving them aid and breaking ties with the Israeli government and army
@9HGGXLL6mos6MO
The curriculum should be fairly representative of everyone, and the subject of Israeli Palestinian conflict should be broached as impartially as possible. Facts should be taught, not opinions.
