I just have little confidence RFK would win, if I knew he would for a fact, then I definitely would, I just have a lot of doubts personally.

Likelihood to be elected is the defining factor. No one in history has run as an independent and won.

Lincoln was in the Republican Party of the time, though it was newly formed, it wouldn’t really fit the criteria of “independent” since the whole two party system wasn’t very cemented by then.

It had been for decades – Democrats and Whigs, before that, Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans. He was not expected to win.
