A pro-Israel House Democrat and Republican plan to introduce legislation creating federally sanctioned "antisemitism monitors" for select college campuses.
Why it matters: It's the first bill introduced in Congress as a direct response to the pro-Palestinian protests that have rocked Columbia University and other colleges in recent days.
Reps. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) and Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) are introducing the College Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability Act – or COLUMBIA Act.
The bill would allow the Department of Education to send a "third-party antisemitism monitor" to any college that receives federal funding — and to revoke that funding for colleges that don't comply.
The monitor, paid for by the school, would be charged with releasing a public, quarterly report evaluating "the progress that a college or university has made toward combating antisemitism."The bill was first reported by Jewish Insider.
"My office and I have spoken with countless Jewish students from campuses across America who feel deeply unsafe, purely as a result of their religious and ethnic identity," Torres said in a statement.
"Jewish students have told my office that they feel completely abandoned by their university administrators and they view Congress as the only avenue for accountability and safety."

Can we start a new America or something? This one one seems to be broken
@L1bertyQuokkaRepublican2wks2W
You don’t think these campus protests are coordinated by outside agents?
@NightingaleJackGreen2wks2W
There are no outside agents almost all the support comes from inside from U.S.
Do you think israel didn't probe who funds BDS all this years. If they had anything they would release it immediately
@XenialPoliticGreen2wks2W
OH! I've se3n this before. They wrote books about it.
The Thought Police alive and well.
And a gay Black man will introduce it
I like how you include that he's gay and black as is those people are incapable of evil lol
@XenialPoliticGreen2wks2W
Do we still have a Constitution?? Tell me we are not heading toward a real dictatorship
This is amazing. All to protect Israel from criticism.
It's beyond criticism of Israel. Free speech is being destroyed because we have because a neo-fascist nation.
@F1libusterPiperGreen2wks2W
It was painfully obvious from the start of Oct. 7 -- everything from Bill Ackman's fraudulent posture against DEI to the Congressional hearings on campus speech -- that the real and sole goal was the formal expansion of speech limits in academia to suppress Israel criticisms:
@L1beralRodLibertarian2wks2W
Torres earning that aipac money (his top donor)
Crazy Israel is the only country that doesn’t have to report how they spend the aid we give them and that aipac doesn’t have to register as a foreign agent & reveal their funding.
They could be buying our politicians w our tax $$
